Why do we need carbohydrates?

During intense exercise sessions Carbohydrates are the body's primary energy source.

Upon ingestion carbohydrates are broken down into glucose molecules and stored in the muscle and liver as 'glycogen'.

As exercise intensity increases, so too does muscle glycogen usage to produce adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Note that ATP is used to fuel all metabolic reactions, often referred to as the energy currency within cells. It can be expected that glycogen stores will only last for roughly 90 minutes before levels drop, inducing the onset of fatigue.

Through simple and effective carbohydrate fuelling we are able to minimise the onset of significantly low glucose / glycogen levels, enabling us to work at higher exercise intensities for prolonged periods of time.
